RESEARCH ON DIFFERENT MEDIA TEXTS

HOLLYOAKS

Hollyoaks is an example of a text which is broadcasted before the watershed .

There are several genre's within this text such as being soap opera, serial, tragedy, comedy and drama. It regularly deals with controversial storylines such as sexual abuse, domestic violence and drugs.
The reason why i am analysing Hollyoaks in my research is because this is the sort of programme i aim to have my coursework like. I watch this programme myself and the reason is because it is entertaining ,has enticing , realisitic storylines and many of the storylines are based around young adults .
Hollyoaks is specifically aimed at young people from the ages of 16-24 .Devised by Phil Redmond, Hollyoaks is an evening weekday soap, lasting for half an hour. It is mostly aimed at young people from the ages of 16-24 however other ages do still watch and enjoy it.Hollyoaks was first broadcasted on the 23rd October 1995, and has attracted an average of 3 million viewers each week. The target audience is young adults from the age of 16-24, who are students of a variety of classes, I know this because when watching the episode there are lots of stories about college life and drinking which people of this age group are familiar to. Everyday student life is being represented in Hollyoaks. The stories and situations vary including bullying, exams, drinking, relationships. The way they have those on screen pop up messages when someone texts is also something that the other soaps don't do so when people see these things they assume it's not for all age groups , and mostly aimed at young people as they text a lot.
The camera work in Hollyoaks gives us the feeling that there is only one camera and that we are watching events as they happen. We can observe from a particular point of view rather than seeing events from different angles. In Hollyoaks there are a lot of over the shoulder shots, this allows us to concentrate on the facial response of one character which we can see, it can also mean that we are identifying with the character whose back we see, as they too would be watching the characters reaction. We normally see characters at the same level; this puts us on a similarity with them.
Some language in Hollyoaks is slang that young people will understand such as "fit" for someone who they think is attractive; or "banter"which describes anything humorous that occurs this language will appeal to young people so they can understand the programme better and be more involved..I feel a good thing about Hollyoaks using trending language is that it will make audience which are a majority of young people feel that it's realistic and fits in with their life . Hollyoaks always starts off with the theme tune so we can recognise that it is about to start and finish, also at the beginning of each episode it starts with waking up  and music playing instead of talking, this is different to other soaps so makes it more personal to the programme and viewers. British people will relate to Hollyoaks much more than American TV programmes such as the O.C as it has the British cultural context and viewers like to see their own country portrayed in a TV programme.
I have researched Hollyoaks because there are many storylines I have seen in this which fit to the teen genre I have picked .

SOME GIRLS

This programme was released in 2012 . Some Girls. It’s equally witty as it is silly and it’s finally filled the gap left when The Inbetweeners finished. Which is why i have picked ths programme , i feel there should be a programme on E4 about the lives of young girls following their life as a student in college to fill the gap that has been left now that The Inbetweeners is gone.
Some girls is about the lives of a group of quirky 16 year old girls who play on the same football team and live on the same inner city estate in London. I've picked this programme to research because its very similar to the way I want my programme to be like and i have watched many episodes of this and enjoyed it . The genre of this is comedy
Throughout the episodes we see them go through the journey of adolescence taking in boys, sex, cliques, teachers , heartbreak and fun.
Some girls is about 4 best friends in south London . Viva is the ambitious girl of the group who narrates each episode-she's the witty one who's determined to go to univerisity and not end up pregnant. Then there’s her three friends Saz who is the brainy asian of the group ; Holli the rough one with aggression issues; and Amber who is the pretty but dim one of the group. It has been described in numerous reviews as a female version of hit comedy series, The Inbetweeners. The Some Girls cast believe they are making a positive difference in showing young women being humorous. It's really important going forward in the world that males and females are equal in all sorts of work, especially on TV and comedy. Comedy is driving that forward, showing that girls are just as funny as boys. They can do just as much.People don't realise that girls are as crude as guys and I think Some Girls brings out the elements that females are not as innocent as everyone portrays especially in the media.
The cast say they can feel like role-models for their young audience and that many of their fans like coming up to them to say which of their friends are like characters in the programme. It allows girls to feel like their irregular, that every girl goes through the same thing and they've got nothing to worry about and every little stress that the girls in Some Girls go through , it's the same stress many other teenage girls are going through right now.
Some may say why do we need another TV show about a group of teenagers. We’ve had Skins, we’ve had The Inbetweeners. It’s not news to anybody these days that growing up is a messy process. Teenagers, TV tells us, like to party. If they’re boys, they’re sex-obsessed and probably kind of gross. If they’re girls, they like to party.Skins showed us that rare wild weekend stretched out over several series, while The Inbetweeners showcased the moments four teenage boys probably wish they could forget, in a Skins-like haze of drink and drugs. And then there was a large gap in the market where the average life of a teenage girl should go which is where Some Girls entered.

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS

The number one show for women aged 12 to 34. The soapy, glamorized murder mystery stars pretty women in their 20s as teenagers who are terrorized by an anonymous, seemingly omnipresent tech maven with an unknown grudge to bear. The show has the elements that have made the genre successful among this demographic: scandal, romance, style, dubious morality, fear of being watched, etc. It's built around the questions of Who is A? And what does A have against these four teenage girls? What I think has made this show successful amongst many females of the age 12-34 is that they get a sense of delight in every secret and lie, bite at each clue that's dangled in front of them, and they are moved by the girls' fear, paranoia, and vulnerability. in my research I found that Pretty Little Liars is the highest-rated scripted series on basic cable for women ages 18-34 and females ages 12-34

Pretty Little Liars also films with desaturation .

SHERLOCK

Sherlock has desaturated shots when filming .
Not much colour . Mostly blacks, beiges and browns

this is effective research that shows a good understanding of audience and their needs. develop the evidence you have for HOW the text talks to them - mode of address.
