Hegenomy-Media Debate

I created a powerpoint in which I presented in front of the class about what hegenomy is and what other theories link to it such as "the othering theory and cultural imperialism. I also said about the different dominant ideologies and gave various different examples using media products.

The pictures above are the examples I used, and this represents the male and female hegenomic ideology that women in media should be presented in a sexualised manner , while men are shown to be dominant .

WWW: I presented everything in a clear structured manner identifying theories and examples as evidence
EBI: apply to another uncommon hegenomic ideology , to get practice in applying the theory to different media products

NO MAKEUP SELFIE- VIRAL CAMPAIGN 2014

Reasons why it was successful and other info:

-Used hashtag which was trending a lot and very popular and easy to use
-  Easily used by many people on Instagram and Facebook especially because everyone has a phone which is accessible to Internet
- Raised more than £8 million for cancer research UK
- #nomakeupselfie campign was started by teenage mother from Stoke-on-Trent. Clearly shows it was started from a young influence who is current with modern day campaigns.
- It was successful because everyone was taking selfless and the easiest way to donate is by text. They listened to the media , learnt and adapted.
-Use social media to recognise and celebrate people taking part, and share their achievements in real time. Creating buzz helps you capitalise on what you’ve already accomplished.

-Fiona Cunningham, 18, decided to encourage people to share pictures of themselves without make-up on social media, and to donate money via text message to the cancer charity, after losing family members to the disease.

- The online campaign also encouraged women to nominate friends to do the same and the trend spread, with an estimated 2.6 million women now thought to have taken part. Another reason why this capaign was so successful is because it was so easy to nominate other people.

Having celebrities also taking part in this made it even more widespread as it created awareness to millions of their fans .

In addition media being a social thing especially using facebook and Instagram it meant people were more liely to share it because they many want to be part of the trend. Maslow's theory of socal needs could be applied to this .

Celebrity representation in the media

A celebrity is a person that is well known in the public eye or slowly becoming more known so its really important how they represent themselves to stop their career ending or getting ruined. The main representation of celebrities is that everyone should aspire to be like them and live the same  lifestyle that they do. This representation is demonstrated in media texts such as magazines, television and advertising.

KIM KARDASHIAN

“She’s the woman who makes Paris Hilton seem shy, retiring and misunderstood. The proud owner of a bottom so generous and rounded that it makes J-Lo’s look like a sad, deflated balloon. A member of a family so unhinged and dysfunctional that, in comparison, the Osbournes seem well-adjusted, everyday folk.”
(freelance journalist Claudine Connell for the Daily Mail Australia wrote this ^)

KimKardashian is a woman that is always in the spotlight of the media. Most of the time she is in the media for her fashion  and her materialistic posssesions. The Kardashians admired for simply being rich.
As a society, we are suffering from the delusion that we should all have bigger houses, fancier cars, bigger bling, and  adventures. MORE. BIGGER. BRIGHTER. Largely because of people like the Kardashians who only show their celebrity lavish life.

ARIANA GRANDE
She started her career off on childrens TV programmes like Nickelodeon's Victorious where she was young and had to represent herself in a very childish and innocent way especially being on a childrens programme. However when she started her singing career she has to represent herself differently, more mature and more sexual to fit into the music industry and sell records. It was also a way to show everyone that she's not a little child anymore and that she has grown up.

She also represents herself through social media like twitter by giving her views .Having formerly split with rapper Big Sean, she posted a proclamation on Twitter in which she addresses the unfair treatment of female pop stars with regards to sexuality and status. She wrote a full essay to share  her opinions. As a celebrity this represents her as being a feminist and also representing women. This has got her public recognition in a positive way.

Another way she represents herself is through how she dresses. Her outfits are usually very feminine, girly and sometimes revealing. She is shown to be very childish and young for her age almost like she's 13 years old when in reality she is 22. However this has slowly changed according to her audience is .

The small costumes and big hair also lead many people to notice the star's dramatic weight loss.
So intense were the accusations, she was suffering from an eating disorder that the young star took to social media. She wrote: 'Yes, I lost a bit of weight last year. It’s because I stopped eating junk food and started making healthy choices. I was happy with the way I was before and I’m still happy now! Just healthier!'

The diva has arrived: When the now thinner ombre haired Ariana stepped out on stage in her black mini dress at the iHeart Radio Music Awards at the start of the year, the transformation from cherub faced girl next door to mini pop star was complete   Transformation: In 2008, Ariana Grande was just a young girl who wanted to sing and now, six years later, is one of the biggest pop stars in the worldTransformation: In 2008, Ariana Grande was just a young girl who wanted to sing and now, six years later, is one of the biggest pop stars in the world
FROM THIS ^         TO THIS ^
She started of her career dressed up in baggy t-shirts and jeans but as her teen fan base grew she started wearing more punk and pretty style dresses then as she got older she wore short dresses. The only reason she came under criticism over the way she dressed is because people still saw her as a young teen girl when she wasn't . Hence why through media such as her songs her lyrics became more provocative and the way she was behaving in her music videos changed  such as her song with The Weeknd 'Love Me Harder'
